The weekend of the Korean Film Festival in Australia in Melbourne kicked off with ‘Little Forest’. This is the third day of week-long KOFFIA and fourth movie that has been screened so far.

Director: Yim Soon-rye
Cast: Kim Tae-ri, Ryu Jun-yeol, Moon So-ri
Genre: Drama

Synopsis:

No job, bad romance and terrible grades… Nothing goes smoothly in young Hye-won’s life in the big city. She puts her unresolved matters behind and impulsively returns to her country hometown, to the house where her mother left her when she was 18. There she reunites with her childhood friends Jae-ha and Eun-sook who are living rural lives in their own ways. Hye-won’s days are filled with simple but peaceful moments as she prepares meals with her organic ingredients. Throughout four seasons Hye-won slowly finds the real pleasure in living the simple life, and realizes the genuine reason that led her back to her homeland.

Review:

In ‘Little Forest‘, the characters embrace nature and food. Hye-won moves back to her rural hometown after getting sick and tired of living in the city. Her life is not going well, and she attempts to have a new start by returning to the country. Even though she has a rocky relationship with her single mother, Hye-won does her best to live well. She spends a lot of time hanging out with her close friends, one of which approaches the romance stage. However, the movie focuses more on how Hye-won rediscovers herself in the country.

A large portion of the movie focuses on food. Hye-won enjoys food and the joy that comes from cooking. Some scenes show the detailed process of how she makes the food from scratch. As it is a farming village, all of the food is fresh and local. The audience will definitely get hungry while watching this movie as the dishes presented are from a range of cuisines. Living in a rural village, cooking is one of Hye-won’s only hobbies and pastimes.

‘Little Forest‘ teaches a worthwhile lesson about going back to your roots. No matter where you go, you should not lose touch with where you originate from. Even though the ending was not expected, it will surely leave you wanting more.
